Recipes For White Elephant Exchange

White Elephant Entrees

There are many great entrees you can serve for the White Elephant party dinner, or bring to the pot luck. These two recipes are some of the most common White Elephant dishes that have traditionally been cooked for this occasion.

White Elephant Casserole

Preparation: 40 minutes, Cooking: 1 hour, Ready in 1 hour and 40 minutes.


What You’ll Need: Pound of bacon, 2 cups of sliced mushrooms, 2 chopped onions, 1 tablespoon of butter, 5 cups frozen hash browns (thawed), 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt, 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper, 4 eggs, 1 1/2 cups of milk, pinch of parsley and a cup of shredded Cheddar cheese.


Place bacon in a large skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain and set aside. Add the mushrooms and onion to the skillet; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent and the mushrooms are tender, about 5 minutes.

Directions: Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish with the tablespoon of butter. Place potatoes in bottom of prepared dish. Sprinkle with salt, garlic salt, and pepper. Top with crumbled bacon, then add the onions and mushrooms.
In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with the milk and parsley. Pour the beaten eggs over the casserole and top with grated cheese. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour or until set.

White Elephant Pasta

Preparation: 5 minutes, Cooking: 15 minutes, Ready in 20 minutes.


What You’ll Need: 1/4 cup butter, 1 cup heavy cream, 1 clove crushed garlic, 2 cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese


Directions: Boil your favourite pasta. Bring water to boil and add salt. After water comes to boil again, drop in pasta and cook it to your desired tenderness. Remove from heat and strain.

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium low heat. Add cream and simmer for 5 minutes, then add garlic and cheese and whisk quickly, heating through. Stir in parsley and serve over cooked pasta or stir in with pasta.

How can there be an Elephant Party without sweets, treats and dessert? Although there are many different desserts you can prepare for this joyous occasion, there are two traditional treats that always have been very popular.

White Elephant Cookies

Preparation: 20 minutes, Cooking: 8 minutes, Ready in: 2 1/2 hours.


What You’ll Need: 1 1/2 cups softened butter, 2 cups of white sugar, 4 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 5 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt


Directions: In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

White Elephant Donut Muffins

Preparation: 15 minutes, Cooking: 15 minutes, Ready in 40 minutes.


What You’ll Need: 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup melted margarine 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 cup milk, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon


Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease 24 mini-muffin cups.
Mix 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup margarine, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Stir in the milk, then mix in the baking powder and flour until just combined. Fill the prepared mini muffin cups about half full. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are lightly golden, 15 to 20 minutes.

While muffins are baking, place 1/4 cup of melted margarine in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of sugar with the cinnamon. Remove muffins from their cups, dip each muffin in the melted margarine, and roll in the sugar-cinnamon mixture. Let cool and serve.
